Kneisel Hall History
Kneisel Hall was founded in 1902 by the talented Franz Kneisel. At 20 years old, Kneisel immigrated from Germany and became the Boston Symphony Orchestra concertmaster. In 1899, he arrived in Blue Hill, Maine, where a group of prominent summering musicians decided to form a musical colony. Kneisel then founded his music school, which offered lessons to promising students. Chamber music rehearsals and ensemble evenings soon became delightful entertainment and learning opportunities.
By 1922, the school had grown too large for its space. After that, another hall was built. Known as Kneisel Hall, this large hall on the side of Blue Hill Mountain has been the center of the school’s activities ever since.
