Bar Harbor Cellars Story
Bar Harbor Cellars is located at Sweet Pea Farm in Bar Harbor, Maine. This farm has been a local spot to get freshly grown produce and freshly cut flowers. In 2003, the farm decided that the next step in honoring their commitment to sustainable agriculture would be to open a vineyard. American wine production is usually thought of as the lush vineyards of Napa Valley or even the rural countryside in Virginia. But Maine? Hard work and willingness to adapt has made it possible for Sweet Pea Farm to produce wine from local fruits with a little help from European exports.
Bar Harbor Cellars Experience
Bar Harbor Cellars is open every day from mid-May through mid-October. Guests are invited to visit Sweet Pea Farm and tour their winery facility. You will be given a clipboard with a list of wines currently offered, organized into white, red, and non-grape varieties. Once you make your selection of six wines, these will be provided for a unique tasting experience. After the wine tasting, you will also receive a complimentary tasting of a new Bar Harbor Cellars hard cider! Tastings are offered for just $5 to try 6, and there are dozens of wines available. The bartenders are always incredibly knowledgeable about the wines and can answer any questions you may have.
Sometimes, there are also samplings from the gift shop next door to pair with the wines, like blueberry jam and fresh cheeses. The Civil War Era building coincides with typical Maine fashion through its rustic features. The atmosphere is warm and inviting; you will most likely want to stay after your tasting to enjoy a whole glass of your favorite wine!
Bar Harbor Cellars Wines
Because of Maine’s cool climate, the grapes are produced mostly in Europe and California. Bar Harbor Cellars receives their grapes from small independent vineyards where they are hand-picked, ensuring quality. The winery has many varieties of wine. Their most popular white is a Riesling that has a light fruity flavor with a hint of citrus. Along with these grapes, local fruit is used to create non-grape wines. These varieties include the famous Bar Harbor blueberry wine and black currant wine. There are also some delicious dessert-style wines available at Bar Harbor Cellars created with rich and smooth concentrated grape nectar.
