Why a Visit to Happytown Farm is Worth Your While
Meet the Volckhausens
Paul and Karen Volckhausen bought the land on which Happytown Farm now stands in 1978. The land hadn’t been farmed since the 1950s, so the couple had their work cut out for them. In 1981, they became commercial farmers and continued to grow their business through the 1990s. Today, Paul, 66, and Karen, 76, are happily working on their four and a half acre farm.
Happytown Farm has flourished throughout the years. During a trip to the farm, you’ll find fresh, certified organic vegetables and flowers in beautiful, well-tended gardens. On top of crops, they now support a small-scale sugaring operation along with a sustainable woodlot. They raise sheep, pigs, and poultry on the land, which are an integral part of nutrient cycling on the farm.
The Volckhausens utilize ecologically friendly farming practices, and they never use any pesticides. Happytown Farm has been a “community supported” farm since 2004. This means that customers can buy a share of the farm every season and share in the farming experience.
How to Visit
