About Cadillac Mountain
Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic Seaboard, measuring in at 1,530 feet above sea level. As the highest peak of over 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island, you can imagine how wonderful the views are. With many observation points at the summit, you can check out sights like the Schoodic Peninsula, and several islands off the coast as well as all the little towns whose lights you will see come on at night if you head up for the sunset. Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the United States where the sun rises each morning from October 7th through March 6th, making a trip up the summit road all the more worthwhile first thing in the morning. Shaped by receding glaciers, you will notice the many beautiful characteristics in the granite that are completely unique to its geologic makeup. Cadillac Mountain was named for the French Explorer, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac in 1918, and was known as Green Mountain before that. Once home to the Green Mountain Cog Railway, visitors and guests to the hotel at the top would travel 1.1 miles up the mountain to enjoy its views and leisure.
