Why Deer Isle, Maine Is One of the Best Places to Go to Get Away from Everything

If you’re looking for places to go to get away from everything, look no further than a stay at historic Pilgrim’s Inn on Deer Isle, Maine. Here you can choose an active or passive getaway, or a little of both. Our guests find that a 3 or 4 night stay provides a perfect respite, and they are still able to see and do all the fun things Deer Isle has to offer. Whether you want to stay put right here on our park-like grounds, or venture around the island, there are tons of ways to unwind.

Relax – Day 1

There is no better place to do so than Pilgrim’s Inn! One of our favorite ways is to indulge in our Maine Kayaking Adventure Package. After a great night of rest in our comfy and clean beds, enjoy breakfast, then paddle around the coast with an experienced kayaking guide as you breathe in fresh air and look out over the calm waters. Afterward, a massage therapist will ease your tired muscles with a restorative massage. Just be sure to reserve this package in advance, and we will schedule it all for you.

Explore – Day 2

Pilgrim’s Inn is located in the heart of Deer Isle. Situated right on Main Street, you are just a short stroll from several galleries, beautiful views, and 44 North Coffee. Stop in for a pour-over coffee or tea, and tell Melissa, Megan and Kasi we said hello. In such a small town, you won’t be bombarded by crowds. Take a drive along the island roads, stop at Sand Beach or Reach Beach to find sea glass and shells, or to wade in the cool water. Head 6 miles south to Stonington to explore more galleries, shops and restaurants. Come explore this calm and quiet area!

Restore – Day 3

Nature is calling you! Take a hike at one of the many Island Heritage Trust nature preserves, like the mossy green woods of Barred Island Preserve. If you time the tide correctly, you can cross the sand bar to get to the little island, to do some more exploring. Check with your innkeepers for tide information.  Spend some time in our Adirondack chairs by the Mill Pond, perhaps with a glass of wine from our bar, gazing out over the water, watching the wildlife. Bring your binoculars and borrow our birding guide to see what you can find. We often see eagles, mergansers, buffleheads and herons. Walk through our meadows and out onto our hidden rock, to get even closer. Be sure to take in a sunset during your stay at Pilgrim’s Inn, just across the street from the inn, over the Northwest Harbor.
